Kanthas Mutton BunnyWhat makes a good bunny chow?

I would say, good cooking, perfect blend of spices, quality ingredients and most of all your love

for cooking. This is what goes into the daily cooking at Kanthas Take Away in Stanger KZN.

The first time I asked some Charou’s as to where I would get the best bunny and they referred me to Kanthas.  This simple laid out take away hidden about 80 km North of Durban in a small town known as Stanger (Kwa – Dukuza). The shop has the bare necessities’ which serves its customer base and the aroma of the freshly cooked curry will drive any person into the shop.

I walked in and ordered a mutton bunny to eat in, the friendly gestures of the staff and warm welcome was astounding. Within 5 minutes my bunny was presented to me, one could immediately see that this curry was freshly prepared, the presentation was excellent and above all it was the best tasting bunny I have had in years.

I am constantly craving to eat that delicious bunny and recently fell privy to visiting Kanthas again at 9am on a Friday morning. The curry was already available, imagine the hot curry on fresh bread with gravy trailing from the bread onto the plate, soft potatoes, pungent aroma, soggy salad and some mango pickle and chilli on the side not forgetting the coke mindrell for wash down . We dug right into the mouth watering mutton bunny chow. This time I had to meet the cook herself Aunty Kantha and this is when I realised that Aunty Kantha has passed on her secrets of cooking to her entire family and all of them was involved in the cooking preparations. As family they deliver food with love and pride.

We Charou’s love eating and we definitely enjoy a finger licking bunny chow. I have over the years tested and tried many restaurants around KZN and JHB and I must admit NO One comes close to Kanthas.

The next time you in the homelands, go ahead and try Kanthas bunny chow.
